A Hilton Head Island man fended off an attempted armed robbery outside his home on Spanish Wells Road Sunday night, according to a Beaufort County Sheriff's Office news release.

The man told deputies that an unknown black man tried to rob him at knifepoint when he had walked out of his home to retrieve something from his car at about 11 p.m.

The suspect demanded money, but the man replied he didn't have any. The suspect tried to stab him, but the man blocked the attack and ran down Spanish Wells Road.

The man sustained a minor laceration to his hand. He was treated at the scene.

The suspect ran towards Diamondback Road. He was between 25 and 30 years old, approximately 6-foot-3 and 180 pounds, and wore a black shirt and blue shorts.
