Real solutions needed to improve our society

Recent letter writers have nailed it. The greatest rates of criminal acts are in black neighborhoods.

But do we really need the reminders? Even black liberals readily admit the obvious facts. I suggest that those who continually repeat the obvious are merely, not so subtly, affirming their own superior, moral high ground. They live in a comfortable social plateau that is isolated from the crime-laden "hood."

Unfortunately, none of the writers ever suggests a possible solution, and this is a problem that must be solved. It's not just a "hood" problem. The problem affects and infects all of society, economically, socially and morally.

Yes, there have been efforts to ease the troubles, but troubles continue and demand even greater effort.

More work opportunities and a stronger education commitment might help. But alas, such projects might require more funding. Dare I say that a slight increase in taxes could improve some of the blights on our social environment?

I know it sounds crazy but I don't believe the question is: "Can we afford it?" It is: "Can we afford not to?"
