Town should get to work fixing hauling contract

info@islandpacket.comAugust 19, 2013

We read with interest the stories in the newspaper regarding the problems with Republic Waste Services' monopoly contract with the Town of Hilton Head Island.

We knew the first time we saw that the garbage men did not put the plastic bags in the cans properly (they just draped them over the can for others to put in place), that there would be trouble. This left the residents of villas -- owners and renters -- to place the bags in the cans, and of course, whenever this was not done, a mess was created for all concerned.

You only get what you pay for, and in the case of Republic, the town did not get much, other than problems that cannot be remedied too quickly.
