Downtown Bay Street should be made one-way

info@islandpacket.comAugust 19, 2013

As the owner of a business on Bay Street, I wouldn't mind having to close for five days to street repaving if the results benefited both the stores and their customers.

I have a common-sense plan: If the three blocks of downtown Bay Street were made one-way from the bridge westward to Charles Street, there could be diagonal parking on one side of the street on each block, adding many, many more spaces, as well as easier parking.

Also, when the swing-span bridge is open, traffic -- and business -- would not have to come to a complete standstill. (Port Republic could be made one-way in reverse, perhaps.) All the other streets would remain as they are.

Come on, Beaufort, it's worth a try, at least for six months.
