Golfer John Patterson wraps up 2-shot win at Hilton Head Open

As the players in the final threesome of the 39th Hilton Head Open stood in the 18th fairway of the Colleton River Plantation's Nicklaus Course waiting for the group ahead to finish on the green, a rules official told Secession Golf Club's David Rogers, "you played a nice round today."

Rogers smiled and joked, "thanks, I just needed you to break his legs on about the third hole."

He was referring to John Patterson, who followed his blistering first-round 62 with a steady 68 on Day 2 to edge Rogers by two strokes and win the Hilton Head Open for his second big victory in less than a month. Patterson also won the S.C. Open on July 25 at Belfair.

"My swing feels good right now," Patterson said. "I've got a lot of confidence going into events after a couple of wins."

Patterson entered the day at 10 under, with Rogers five strokes behind him at 5 under. Former USC Beaufort golfer Luke McClellan was between them at 7 under.

After six holes, Rogers had jumped to 8 under to cut the lead to three with birdies on Nos. 2, 3 and 6. Patterson had birdies on Nos. 3 and 5 but dropped a shot when he bogeyed No. 6, missing a two-and-a-half-foot putt.

It was a rare miscue on the day for Patterson.

"I missed a couple of short putts," Patterson said, "But I just had to hang in there. I hit the ball solid from tee to green and hit a couple of putts when I needed to."

He did more than hang in there. Patterson didn't make another bogey and had three more birdies to card his 68.

Rogers closed with birdies on the final three holes for Sunday's low score of 65 to reach 12 under and make the final margin two strokes.

"I put myself in great position coming into today," Patterson said. "David is a great player, always has been. I knew it was going to be a fight out there. I thought 68 would do it at the start of the day. That was kind of the number I had in my head. And I played solid all day."

McClellan rolled in a 15-foot eagle putt on No. 7 to briefly pull into a second-pace tie with Rogers at 9 under, but he treaded water until the end, shooting 71 to finish third at 8 under.

Patterson attributed much of recent success to the work he has put in on his short game.

"It's that and the opportunity to play Chechessee Creek several times recently," Patterson said. "It's a great golf course to get your game down. It's a great practice facility, and I've had the time to do it. I've been very fortunate."

Patterson will put his good fortune to the test in the upcoming weeks.

He'll team with Beaufort's Rob Simmons in the S.C. Golf Association's Mid-Amateur Four Ball Championship on Aug. 17 and 18 at Dataw Island. Then on Sept. 9, Patterson will take part in the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship qualifier Sept. 9 at his home course of Chechessee Creek.

And Sept. 26-29, Patterson will play the Crump Cup amateur invitational at Pine Valley Golf Club in New Jersey.
