SCE&G is warning customers to watch out for scams involving callers posing as employees of the electric utility.
Scam artists have been calling utility customers across the country and telling them they are late on their power bills, according to a news release. The caller instructs the customers to buy a prepaid debit card and read the numbers on the card to the fake employee, who threatens to cut off the customers' service if they don't pay.
SCE&G spokesman Robert Yanity said some of its customers in the Beaufort County area have been affected by the scam, but most cases have been in the Columbia area.
Beaufort County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Sgt. Robin McIntosh said no cases have been reported recently, but the scam has come up several times in the past.
People who believe they have been a victim should call SCE&G's customer service department at 800-251-7234.
