American Cancer Society, Sgt. Jasper Relay Team grateful to community

letters@islandpacket.comAugust 5, 2013

The American Cancer Society and the Sgt. Jasper Relay Team would like to thank the communities of Beaufort and Jasper counties for so graciously supporting our "Swamp Run for Sue," 5K Run Walk and Day of Paddling. It was a beautiful day at Sgt. Jasper as the many participants and volunteers took their positions throughout the park.

Co-chairman Johnny Davis welcomed the participants as Play Hard Event Timing saw to the registration of the runners. He explained the concept of the event, and the reason for the dedication to Sue Chapman, who lost her battle against cancer Feb. 25, 2011: "... a visionary leader, teacher and mentor, she created an army of friends. ..." We all felt that she would have enjoyed everything about the day.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Publix Markets for supplying water and fruit for the runners, walkers paddlers and volunteers and All Print Custom Tees, Sgt. Jasper Park and Team Swamp Chicks for their generous support. And thanks to all the participants and volunteers, who came together for the success of this important event.

We must continue the fight against cancer. We must save more lives faster. We must solve the cancer problem.

Nancy Wellard, income director
