North of the Broad Class Notes for Aug. 5

BEAUFORT HIGH SCHOOL: Kate Samuel, a rising senior, and Sebastian Cardenas, a rising sophomore, will study abroad this coming school year through the Rotary Youth Exchange Program. Samuel, sponsored by the Rotary Club of the Lowcountry, will attend the I.E.S. Tegueste School of Math and Science on the island of Tenerife in the Canary Islands of Spain in September and return July 2014. Cardenas, sponsored by the East Cooper Rotary Breakfast Club, will attend high school in Hoxter, Germany. He leaves Aug. 24 and will return next summer as well. Both students will live with host families who have been approved by local Rotary Clubs. They will be immersed in both the language and culture of their respective countries.   • The first Athletic Booster Club meeting for the upcoming school year will be held at 6 p.m. Aug. 5 in the school cafeteria. All parents, guardians, athletes and interested community members are encouraged to attend.

  • Students Against Destructive Decisions Club will sponsor a food drive Aug. 6-13 as part of its back-to-school activities. Returning SADD Club members and students interested in being a part of the SADD Club are encouraged to drop off canned goods in the front office. The goal is to collect 200 cans by the end of August to assist HELP of Beaufort provide food to folks in our community. Details: Diane Grooms, SADD Club Advisor,

  • The school swim team begins practice Aug. 5 at the pool on campus. Practices are 3-5 p.m. Monday-Friday. All students trying out must have a current South Carolina High School League Physical Form on file in the Athletic Department. Students should bring goggles, a towel and a swim cap to all practices. Competitive-style swimsuits should be worn, with shorts, T-shirts and shoes available for dry land practice. Details: Coach Eklund, 843-322-5574



  • After a break to allow for preparation for the 2013-14 school year, toddlers and new students will be welcomed for orientation Aug. 15. Parents for all classes, including primary class (grades one-three), will have an open house in the evening. The school year will begin Aug. 19 for all children, ages 18 months to 9 years.
