Pickup truck possibly burned with firecrackers

A pickup truck left in the parking lot of Lady's Island Plaza from late Wednesday to Thursday appears to have been damaged with firecrackers, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office. At about 10:30 p.m., a clerk at the nearby gas station said he heard several loud "pops" and looked outside to see smoke coming from a pickup truck parked nearby, according to the Sheriff's Office.

Firefighters responded and found a shattered rear passenger-side window, burned debris on the floor of the truck and burn marks on the carpeting, the Sheriff's Office said. Evidence consistent with fireworks was found at the scene.

About $400 worth of damage was done to the vehicle. The owner said he had left it in the parking lot because the battery was dead. He said he didn't know who would want to damage it.

The incident was not an active investigation as of Thursday.
