Harbor River Bridge, the only vehicle bridge that connects Harbor, Hunting and Fripp Islands to St. Helena Island, will be closed to cars from 10 p.m. Sunday until 6 a.m. Monday, according to a release from the S.C. Department of Transportation.

Routine maintenance and repairs on the mechanics of the swing bridge will be done during the closure, and no traffic in either direction will be allowed across.

DOT has also updated the timeframe for repairs to the Richard V. Woods Memorial Bridge that connects the city of Beaufort and Lady's Island. The bridge has been periodically closed to traffic all week due to mechanical problems.

Gear boxes for the bridge, which was built in the early 1970s, need repair and have been sent to Griffin Gear Inc. in Spartanburg. Original estimates were that the repaired parts would be installed this weekend, but DOT now expects the work to be done by Wednesday.

Once the gear boxes are repaired, the bridge will operate as usual and traffic flow should improve as it will be able to open and close faster.

Additional repair work should be completed by mid-August, and the repairs do not require detours or closing the bridge to vehicles, according to the release.
