A man who claimed to have a gun and attempted to rob a Bluffton drugstore Saturday night was unmasked and chased away by customers, according to the Bluffton Police Department.

The suspect came into the Walgreens at 868 Fording Island Road at about 11 p.m. wearing a mask. He claimed he had a gun and demanded money and cigarettes, the police report said.

Customers standing nearby confronted the suspect, who then ran away. Before he fled, the customers were able to take off his mask, and he was captured on the store's surveillance video, the report said.

The investigation continues. Anyone with information can call Detective Mayers with the Bluffton Police Department at 843-706-4554 or Crime Stoppers at 888-274-6372.
