Hundreds oppose plans for trash transfer station

info@islandpacket.comJuly 29, 2013

In the July 23 story "Debate over trash station continues," some key information was omitted.

First, Thomas and Maybank Mike from the Chechessee community on Mike Drive, whose family has owned property there for 400 years, spoke against the trash transfer station on Chechessee Road, which is less than a mile from them. They have a petition from this community that is forthcoming.

And speaking of petitions, it should be noted that Spring Island presented a petition with more than 185 signatures to Beaufort County Council. The general manager of Spring Island also read a letter on behalf of the entire membership, which stated concerns about the transfer station.

Callawassie Island presented a petition with more than 280 signatures, and the Chechessee community presented 204 signatures from the Okatie area. If my math is correct, that adds up to more than 650 signatures. These petitions show concern and determination to save the environment from the devastation that would occur if this facility were built on this property. They all feel the beauty we see today would be taken away by the smell, pollution, trash and view of trucks and buildings just yards away from many homes and marshland.

The county should find an alternative sight for this type of facility, and I hope they do it soon.
