Beaufort, Bluffton sidewalk projects slated for funding

The S.C. Department of Transportation seeks public comment about sidewalk projects in Beaufort and Bluffton that stand to receive a combined $1.6 million in federal funding.

The city of Beaufort would receive $747,260 for its Allison Road Pedestrian Connector.

The project involves installing a multipurpose path and sidewalk along Allison Road at its intersection with Ribaut Road, ending at the intersection of Rising Tide Drive, according to the DOT. It also includes minor landscaping along Allison Road.

City manager Scott Dadson said the path would connect sidewalks in that area to the Spanish Moss Trail, which is being built in phases and is expected to link Beaufort and Port Royal. The DOT sidewalk project is not part of the trail, however.

Bluffton would receive $891,330 for sidewalks along May River Road.

The project begins on Pin Oak Street and ends on both sides of Whispering Pine Street, with a continuation of the sidewalk on the north side of S.C. 46 to Buck Island Road, the release said.

The comment period ends Aug. 9, and the input will be compiled for the DOT Commission's consideration.

Comments can be sent to Mark Pleasant, Statewide Planning Chief, S.C. Department of Transportation, P.O. Box 191, Columbia, SC 29202.

An email comment form also is available at www.scdot.org/inside/public_comment_FY13TransAltPrg.aspx.

The money is aimed at helping local governments pursue projects to encourage walking and biking, according to the release.
