Hilton Head dropped its opener Saturday at the Dixie Majors World Series for 15- to-19-year-olds in North Charleston, falling 8-3 to Mississippi.

Mississipi led 4-0 before a four-run sixth made it 8-0.

Hilton Head scored three times in the bottom of the seventh and had the bases loaded with two outs, but John David Reichel struck out to end the threat.

Hilton Head's Taylor Place was 2 for 3 and was a hit by pitch. Randy Young went 3 for 4, Chase Clayton was 2 for 3 with a walk and Dylan Powell was 2 for 4.

Powell, Cem Caglayan and Lincoln Fuller pitched for Hilton Head.

Powell also competed in the home run derby Saturday night, which was won by Florida.

Hilton Head faces Alabama in an elimination game Sunday.
