2 Hilton Head Island junior tennis teams win state titles

Both earn berths to sectionals in Alabama

Two of three Hilton Head Island tennis teams that competed in the state Junior Team Tennis Championships last weekend in Florence earned a title and berth in the Sectionals held Aug. 16-18 in Auburn, Ala.

The Hilton Head Island Tennis Landsharks had two U14 teams and one U18 team representing the PTI Beaufort County league.

The 18s team won a tight round robin by a margin of three games. Maddy Bauer, Kate Bennett, Cameron Clark, Stevie De Vincentis, Matthew Feldman, Brad Malool, Katie Rankin, Ian Schenkel and Phillip Tong all contributed to the victory.

Also helping the team get to state were Hannah Brink, Madison Dillon and Lindsey Lane. Coach Joey Nylund, a former Bluffton High standout, kept the players focused.

The 14s state championship squad consisted of Matthew Ball, Robert Gavin, Alex Ittenbach, Holly Kerr, Samantha Kriney and Sarah Wood. Additional team members are Cole Bryant, Henry Clare Cram, Meredith Inglis, Stratton Pollitzer, and Baruk Srivastava.

Katie Hoch, a standout at University of Wisconsin, assisted in coaching the team to victory.
