The S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control awarded Beaufort County nearly $65,000 in grants for solid-waste and recycling efforts.
The money will offset costs for improvements at several convenience centers, and pay for an electronics recycling event and educational materials for tire recycling, the county said in a news release.

The largest grant, for more than $33,000, with pay for a second gas-oil mixture tank and a new concrete slab and carport awning at the Simmonsville Road site in Bluffton. The Pritchardville center also will get a new slab and carport awning.

The electronics event will be paid for with a $28,000 grant, and the tire-recycling education campaign will be paid for with a $3,750 grant.
