The Bluffton Boiled Peanut Festival returns Aug. 24

Posted on July 26, 2013

Who says boiled peanuts are only good for a snack? The Boiled Peanut Festival is going to be the main course on Aug. 24 in Bluffton.

The fest was first held last year during the Bluffton Farmers Market. It's now got a full day all to its own. The fest runs from 2 to 8 p.m. Aug. 24 on Calhoun Street.

From a release:

"As always the highlight of the festival will be the boiled peanut cook-off but will also include a boiled peanut eating competition for all ages, Ms. Peanut and Little Goober Contest, food vendors, and music by Tom Hall & The Plowboys. There will be preview day Thursday, August 22 at the Bluffton Farmer’s Market where the World's Largest Boiled Peanut will be unveiled."

I had the honor of serving as a judge for the boiled peanut competition last year. I was a bit skeptical at first at how different one boiled peanut could be from another, but, as it turned out, Bluffton's creativity proved me wrong. One of my personal favorites was the coffee-infused peanut from Corner Perk's Josh Cooke.
