A 77-year-old man died Tuesday morning after a golf cart accident in Sun City Hilton Head, according to the Beaufort County Coroner's Office.

Donald James Lorber of Bluffton was driving a golf cart in the community about 7:45 p.m. Monday when he veered off the road and struck the bumper of a car, then a small tree in the yard of a residence, Deputy Chief Coroner David Ott said.

Lorber fell out of the golf cart, hit his head and was found next to the cart, S.C. Highway Patrol Senior Trooper Bridget Wyant said. Further details about the accident were not available Thursday.

Lorber was transported by LifeStar air ambulance to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 2:37 a.m. Tuesday, Ott said.

His body is at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, where autopsy results are pending. Ott said it is not clear whether Lorber died as a result of the accident or of natural causes that might have led to it.

A memorial service for Lorber will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Lowcountry Presbyterian Church in Bluffton.
