Par hard to come by on first day of South Carolina Open

Patrick Rada leads at Belfair after opening-round 69

sports@islandpacket.comJuly 24, 2013

A strong breeze kept the temperatures, as well as the scores, in check on the first day of the 62nd South Carolina Open on Tuesday on Belfair Plantation's West Course in Bluffton.

Just four players broke par on the day, led by former University of South Carolina golfer Patrick Rada, an apprentice assistant PGA professional from Eagle Point Golf Club in Wlimington, N.C., who managed his way to a one-stroke lead with four birdies and one bogey for a round of 3-under 35-34--69.

Just behind him are Aaron Black, an apprentice teaching pro at Charlotte Golf Links in Charlotte, N.C., and Arizona State golfer Spencer Lawson from Davidson, N.C., who posted solid scores of 2-under 70.

Charleston's Kurtis Luedtke is the fourth golfer under par. His 1-under 71 puts him alone in fourth place.

The top area golfer is Bluffton amateur John Patterson, who is tied for fifth at even-par 72 with four other golfers, including Columbia PGA pro and former Atlanta Braves minor leaguer and USC baseball star Burke Cromer.

Hank Haney IJGA product and Gamecock Ben Dietrich is tied for 10th at 1-over 73 and 2013 Hilton Head Amateur champion J.D. Hoft is tied for 16th at 2-over 74.

The field will be reduced to the low 60 contestants and ties after Wednesday's round. Players will tee off for the second round at 8 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. from the first and 10th tees.
