Several new hires for administration jobs in the Beaufort County School District, including the head of human resources and a head of school safety and security, were approved by the school board Tuesday.

The district's head of human resources will be Alice Walton, who has been with the district since 1991 and previously was the director for certified staff and teacher quality. She has also been a middle school teacher, gifted and talented coordinator and district-level supervisor of teacher evaluation.

Walton led the human resources department last school year while its former head, Jacki Rosswurm, was the district's acting superintendent. Rosswurm retired last month.

David Grissom, a 25-year law enforcement veteran from Indiana, has been named the district's protective services officer. Grissom will supervise safety and security at the district's schools. He currently commands the investigations division of the Hobart Police Department in Hobart, Ind.

Other hires announced were:

  • Bonnie Almond, director of secondary academic intervention, will focus on improving student achievement in sixth through 12th grade. Almond has worked in North Carolina schools for 36 years as a teacher and principal.
  • Mark Chauhan, director of network operations-technology, will monitor and support computer and communications systems. Chauhan has been a systems support specialist for the district for four years.
  • Alvilda Graham will be an assistant principal at Hilton Head Island Middle School. Graham has 13 years of experience as a teacher and administrator on Florence and Durham, N.C.
