Lowcountry Heat advance to 2nd round of American Legion baseball playoffs

The Lowcountry Heat defeated Conway, 14-9, on Thursday night in Conway to win their American Legion baseball first-round playoff series, 3-1.

The Heat, who fell behind 8-2 in the second after jumping to a 2-0 lead, scored six times in the seventh inning and five in the eighth to put Conway away. They advance to the second round to face Sumter next week.

Logan Phillips had a big night for the Heat. He blasted a two-run home run in the second and a two-run, bases-loaded double in the seventh.

The home run was his fourth in the four-game series, a Heat record. He was also intentionally walked for the fifth time in the series.

Randy Young added a solo homer in the third for the Heat, while Caleb Martin was 4 for 5, Kevin Campbell had three hits and four RBIs and Storm Grisham had a pinch-hit bases-loaded two-run double.

Bluffton's Chance Murphy earned the win in relief to move to 4-0 on the year and 2-0 in the series.

The Heat, who tallied 18 hits, improved to 15-5.

Post 185 opens the second round at 7 p.m. Monday at Sumter. The series comes to Hilton Head Island High School at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
