Garage burns down in Beaufort electrical fire

A garage fire on Aster Street in Beaufort Monday afternoon was apparently started by an electrical short, a spokesman with the Beaufort-Port Royal Fire Department said.

Capt. John Robinson said the detached garage caught fire at about 4 p.m. Monday. The homeowner said the fire started due to an electrical short in a refrigerator located in the garage, Robinson said.

An investigation confirmed the cause, Robinson said.

Robinson said the garage was a total loss after it "pretty much burnt to the ground."

He said firefighters concentrated on protecting two nearby houses from catching fire. Those houses suffered only minimal damage.

Once firefighters concentrated on the garage, the fire only took about six minutes to put out, Robinson said.
