Johnston wins annual Firecracker 5000 run on Hilton Head Island

sports@islandpacket.comJuly 5, 2013

More than 1,600 runners competed in Hilton Head Island's annual Fourth of July tradition, the Firecracker 5000 5-kilometer race, and it was local runner Mack Johnston who crossed the line in first place.

Johnston, of Hilton Head Island, clocked a time of 15 minutes, 52 seconds around the new race course. The event typically begins at The Mall at Shelter Cove, but because of ongoing construction there, this year's race started at Jarvis Creek Park.

Johnston, 19, finished eight seconds ahead of runner-up Dominic Perronie of Louisville, Ky.

Caitlin Keen, 20, of Fort Worth, Texas, was the top female runner. She placed 30th overall, finishing in a time of 18:32. Erika Shaughnessy of Hilton Head Island was the second female runner to cross the line, coming in 36th overall with a time of 18:49.
