AP story leaves out Jewish contributions

info@islandpacket.comJuly 4, 2013

On June 29, this newspaper published a story from The Associated Press, "Andalusian region fuses Christianity and Islam." What an (intentionally?) incomplete, uninformative piece of fluff.

Not mentioned was the rich interwoven history of the Jewish Diaspora in Spain's "Golden Era," and the inestimable contributions of that population to civilization then and now. I have just recently returned from visiting Al Andaluz, much more aware and informed of the role that the Jews of Spain played in architecture, botany, geography, medicine, mathematics, poetry and philosophy under the leadership of such famous names as Maimonides, Samuel Ha-Nagid, Moses ibn Ezra, Solomon ibn Gabirol, and Judah Halevi.

And finally, completely sanitized, was the attempted extermination of the Jews of Spain by the Muslims, particularly the Almoravids, after the mid-11th century, and the forced expulsion of all surviving Jews by Isabella and Ferdinand in March 1492, the results of which are lamented to this day by a poverty-stricken Spain trying to resurrect its Jewish history.

Readers looking for information could, and should, have been much better served.
