Recreation Briefs, July 3: Beaufort weightlifters stand out at national event

Beaufort's C.J. Cummings continued to earn the accolades this past week.

The Team Savannah weightlifter was named the top lifter under 13 years old at the USA Weightlifting Youth Championships in St. Joseph, Mo. Cummings lifted 100 kilograms on the snatch, and his clean and jerk was 125 kilograms. His 225kg total was an American youth record for his weight class.

Cummings was awarded a key to St. Joseph for his effort.

Cummings' brother, Omar Cummings, lifted 131 kilograms in the clean and jerk, an American record for his age and weight. Cummings finished second overall among boys ages 14-15.

Team Savannah finished first in the boys 16-17-year-old division. It finished second in the age 14-15 division.


The Hilton Head Island Recreation Association has selected its volunteer coaches of the year, honoring 12 individuals for promoting and exemplifying good sportsmanship in its youth athletic programs.

At the June board meeting, the Association recognized coaches Shelly Graupner, Tom Doyle, Mike Mize, Shannon Stephens, Kraig Minckler, Jim Sanford, Mic Thompson, Tim Dorion, Mike Kelca, John Richardson, Dennis Bettez and Tom Stauffer. Each received the Association's Outstanding Volunteer Coaches award.
