Former S.C. Superintendent of Education Dr. Barbara Nielsen, who served from 1990-98, said Monday that Common Core learning standards being implemented in the Beaufort County School District this fall should be embraced, not feared. The standards do not co-opt or override local decisions on curricula or teaching materials. Decisions in standardized tests will remain a decision made by state and local districts.
