Volunteers in Medicine Hilton Head Island thanks St. Francis Thrift Shop for grant

letters@islandpacket.comJuly 1, 2013

On behalf of Volunteers in Medicine Hilton Head Island and the thousands of patients we serve, I write to extend our sincere thanks to St. Francis Thrift Shop, for its generous grant to be used for the purchase of critical diabetes drug supplies.

A national epidemic, diabetes affects an incredible 8.3 percent of the U.S. population, and this number is escalating at an alarming rate. Our volunteers are identifying new diabetic patients weekly in triage to add to the more than 700 patients already enrolled in the diabetes management program at VIM.

Diabetes is a difficult disease to manage, and the clinic has an essential need to have pharmaceutical agents on hand to initiate therapy with newly diagnosed diabetics. At VIM, our goal is to evolve from treatment of the disease to management of the disease.

We are also thrilled to be celebrating our 20th anniversary this year. We are so grateful to the continued generosity of St. Francis Thrift Shop, which enables us to provide such desperately needed high quality medical care for the underserved in this exceptional community of which we are all so proud. Thank you for playing an integral role in support of our mission of healing.
