A 23-year-old Beaufort man was charged with possession of cocaine and marijuana last week after deputies saw him passing a marijuana cigarette to a passenger, according to a report from the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies arrested the man on June 21 after they spotted him handing a marijuana cigarette to the female passenger as he drove near the Circle K gas station on Lady's Island, the report said.

The driver was pulled over after he made a turn onto Sea Island Parkway without using a signal. The passenger, who owned the car, allowed deputies to search the vehicle, and they recovered the marijuana cigarette, the report said.

After finding the marijuana, deputies searched the driver, who became nervous and started repeating, "I'm going to jail, I'm going to jail," the report said. The driver told deputies he had something in his pocket.

Deputies found a small bag of cocaine in his pocket.

The vehicle's owner was not charged and told deputies she was unaware the driver had drugs on him.

The driver was taken to the Beaufort County Detention Center and released on his own recognizance June 22.
