Hilton Head Island's Alison Riske won her first-round Wimbledon match Tuesday at The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in London. The win was her first in a Grand Slam event.
Riske, ranked 126th in the world, defeated 31st-seeded Romina Oprandi of Switzerland. Riske was leading the match 6-7 (5), 7-5, 3-1 when Oprandi retired with an injury. Riske is now 3-0 against Oprandi.
In the second round, Riske will face Poland's Urszula Radwanska, a 7-6 (3), 4-6, 6-2 winner Tuesday over American Mallory Burdette. Radwanska is ranked 44th in the world.
Riske is 2-1 in her career against Radwanska, with Radwanska winning the most recent match in three sets in the first round of last year's Australian Open. Riske does have a win over her on grass, taking a three-setter at the Wimbledon warm-up event in Birmingham in 2011.
Riske made it to the semifinals of the Birmingham tournament two weeks ago.
Riske, 22, trains at Van Der Meer Tennis Center. She had previously lost in the first round of Wimbledon twice (2010 and 2011), the Australian Open (2011 and 2012) and the U.S. Open (2011).
