New pier opens in Jasper County

A larger, more accessible aluminum fishing pier has been built at Knowles Island on the Broad River, according to the S.C. Department of Natural Resources.

The pier, about 13 miles from downtown Ridgeland off Knowles Island Road, is owned and maintained by Jasper County.

The original pylons of a trestle for the railroad that ran between Charleston and Savannah during the Civil War will remain at the pier as a habitat for fish, DNR said.

Some of the money for the improved pier came from fees paid by anglers for saltwater fishing licenses.
