Man killed after hit by S.C. Highway Patrol cruiser identified

The man killed after he was struck by an S.C. Highway Patrol cruiser on U.S. 21 Wednesday morning has been identified.

Beaufort County Coroner Ed Allen identified the man as 67-year-old Juan Vargas.

Vargas was hit by a Highway Patrol Ford Crown Victoria at about 5 a.m. Wednesday on U.S. 21 near Seabrook. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

An investigation into the crash by the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office is ongoing.
