Hilton Head Island Airport plans to expand its terminal which is expected to cost about $1.9 million according to Beaufort County's 2011 updated airport master plan. The larger rendering shows the proposed expansion of the terminal, while the inset illustrates the terminal in its current state.

The Beaufort County Airports Board on Thursday is expected to give updates on plans for improvements at two county airports, one on Hilton Head Island and the other on Lady's Island.

The board will meet at 1:30 p.m. in the Beaufort County Government Center's council chambers, 100 Ribaut Road, Beaufort.

The proposed expansion project at Hilton Head Island Airport would add more seating, security areas and restrooms to the airport's terminal. The project is estimated to cost $1.9 million, and construction could begin in September.

The board is also expected to discuss plans that lay out nearly $25 million in infrastructure and safety upgrades at the Beaufort County Airport on Lady's Island.

County Council Chairman Paul Sommerville said in February that he would seek a vote from County Council on that proposal, which recommends extending the runway by almost 1,000 feet.
