Joe Maffo, owner of Critter Management, picks up a female alligator that he wrangled on June 19 in the median at the intersection of U.S. 278 and Gumtree Road on Hilton Head Island as Beaufort County Sheriff deputies watch. Maffo said the alligator probably came from the Marshpoint Villa area and was likely headed to Jarvis Creek Park to nest.

Why did the gator cross the road?

A 7-foot female alligator trapped in a median at the intersection of U.S. 278 and Gumtree Road on Hilton Head Island Wednesday morning was likely on her way to a nearby lagoon, wildlife officials say.

After wrangling the gator, Joe Maffo of Critter Management helped her complete her journey to Jarvis Creek Park, where he released her.

"She couldn't wait to get away," he said.
