Lexington's Lauren Stephenson fired a 4-under-par 66 for the first-round lead and a course record Tuesday in the AJGA Hank Haney IJGA Junior Open at Chechessee Creek Club in Okatie.

In the Boys Division, Hilton Head Island resident and Hank Haney IJGA student Taiga Fujii, of Japan, shot a 2-under 68 to claim the first-round lead on the par-70 course.

The event features 57 boys and 19 girls, ages 12 to 18, from 17 states, Canada, Japan and Thailand. The Boys Division is playing the course at 6,502 yards while the girls are playing the course at 5,779 yards.

Stephenson had seven birdies, shooting 3-under 32 on the front nine, and 1-under 34 on the back. That included a surprising birdie on the par-4 No. 8 that brought her to 4 under.

"I had a 5-hybrid into the green and I hit and I thought it was going into the bunker and it ended up being a foot from the hole," she said. "That was probably my best hole."

Stephenson's 66 set the course record for women at Chechessee, which opened in 2000.

"It feels really good," Stephenson said. "It gives me a lot of confidence for the rest of the summer and it's nice to know that I can play well on this course with two days left."

Spartanburg's Anne Taylor Hough is in second at 2-under 68, ahead of third-place Aliea Clark of Carlsbad, Calif., who shot 69.

In the Boys Division, Fujii carded his first birdie on the back nine, on the par-4 No. 3. After a long drive, Fujii hit a 52-degree wedge to 5 feet and made the putt for birdie.

"I felt better in my mind after that," said Fujii. "My putting (wasn't) good today. I want to get more birdies tomorrow."

Fujii qualified for the tournament on Sunday with an even-par 72.

"Today's 68 is my best score here, so tomorrow I want to get the best score again," he said.

Fujii has a one-stroke lead over Shota Ozaki of Japan.

Hilton Head Island High School's Andrew Orischak is part of a five-way tie for third along with Matthew Plunkett of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., IJGA student Tennoshin Ogawa of Japan, Davis Morrison of Charlotte, and Stanton Schorr of Columbus, Ga., at even-par 70.

Hilton Head Christian Academy's Bryson Nimmer is tied for eighth at 1-over 71.

Second-round tee times will run from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. off the Nos. 1 and 10 tees.
