Boating center would enrich all our lives

Despite an idyllic upbringing on Hilton Head Island, I did not have much opportunity to explore the wonders of the waters surrounding our beautiful island.

As I left a recent town meeting, I was thinking about Charles Fraser and his vision and realized that it would be a disservice to young and old not to have a public sailing and rowing center.

Many towns offer a wonderful shopping center; many others have world-class golf and tennis. Any town can have bike paths and parks. But Hilton Head is one of the few towns that can offer a boating center. We owe it to present and future residents to enrich their lives beyond the ordinary.

Furthermore, to make such a center mediocre is not what makes our island special. Imagine if Fraser had thought small and spent less money on Harbour Town. We would not have a world-class attraction if he had not gone beyond mediocre.

Let's build on the island's unique features and give our children a chance to be on the water. Such a center would make Hilton Head more attractive to residents and visitors and fulfill the goal of enriching the lives of residents and guests. What better way to enrich lives than to allow them access to our glorious waterways.
