Kick-off planned for David Schein Store restoration

Historic Beaufort Foundation is planning a Kick-off Cookout party from 6 to 8 p.m. June 27 to mark the start of its renovations of the David Schein Store at 702 Bladen St.

The 3,200-square-foot building -- commonly known as the Coastal Contractors building for the construction company that long occupied it -- has been empty since 2006. The foundation intends to stabilize and sell the structure. It is the last remaining historic commercial building on Bladen Street, according to the foundation.

The building will be restored to its two-story, gable fronted form with wood siding. A metal roof will be installed if funding allows. Non-structural walls, dropped ceilings and tiled floors will be removed to expose the original floor plan, ceiling heights and wooden floors. Windows and entrances that were moved or covered in the past will be restored, including the original storefront entry.

The cookout is free and open to the public. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs. Sea Eagle Market will provide food for $10 and drinks will be $1 to $2.
