Local golf notebook, June 13: Beaufort's Fickes leads SCGA Junior Championship entering final round

Beaufort High School rising senior Josh Fickes is the leader headed into Thursday's final round of the 55th S.C. Golf Association's Junior Championship at the Country Club of Lexington.

Fickes has a two-day total of 8-under-par 69-67--136, good enough for a two-stroke lead over Aiken's Alex Hardy. Play starts at 8 a.m. Thursday, while Fickes, Hardy and Justin Hood of St. Matthews tee off from No. 1 at 9:30 a.m.

Hilton Head Christian Academy's Bryson Nimmer is tied for 14th at 1 over, while Bluffton High's Alec Weary is tied for 31st at 5 over. Tied for 40th at 6 over are Hilton Head Christian's R.J. Bartolomucci and Hilton Head Island High's Andrew Orischak.

WEARY BROTHERS FINISH TOP 3

Bluffton's Alec Weary shot a two-day total 3-under par to hold on and defeat Daniel Fienemann by a stroke to win the Boys 11-14 Division at the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour's Nike Cup Series Event No. 4 in Locust Grove, Ga.

Drew Weary shot a 67 on Sunday, good enough for the lowest round of the tournament and a third-place finish in the Boys 11-14 Division.

HOLES-IN-ONE

  • Dick Labonte hit a hole-in-one on the 11th hole at Palmetto Dunes Arthur Hills Course. He used a 7-iron.

  • Kim Hopkins hit a hole-in-one June 8 on the 17th hole at Moss Creek's South Course. She used an 8-iron. Witness was Lee Richardson.

  • Dennis Recker hit a hole-in-one June 10 on the 11th hole at Argent Lakes Golf Club. He used a 9-iron. Witnesses were John Ward, Jim Lemehaute, and Jim Tiessen.
