A 33-year-old St. Helena Island man was charged with driving under the influence after he crashed his car into a ditch early Tuesday, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies found the man sitting outside his flipped Acura sedan near the intersection of Club Bridge Road and Ernest Drive on St. Helena, an incident report said. The man told deputies he had attempted to avoid a deer and lost control of the car.

He failed a sobriety test and was taken to the Beaufort County Detention Center, where he was held in lieu of a $1,022 bond.
