Lawmakers deliver on probate, trust changes

Many thanks to lawmakers for passing a major overhaul to South Carolina's probate and trust laws.

As someone who served on the South Carolina Bar Association's Probate Code Revision Committee for several years, drafting the legislation and commentary, I want to thank members of our local Legislative Delegation, who supported the process and unanimously voted for the changes that will greatly benefit the public.

In particular, I would like to thank Sen. Tom Davis, who regularly asked me how he could assist in the process, and Rep. Andy Patrick who supported the legislation. I would also like to thank the Greater Island Council, which provided me a vehicle to garner support for the legislation with Gov. Nikki Haley's legislative liaison and personal staff. Although there is always more work to be done in the legislature, the public can be grateful for this tremendous improvement to the probate and trust code, which will likely impact almost every person in South Carolina.
