Lane closure Thursday night on US 278 near Hilton Head

A westbound lane of U.S. 278 near Hilton Head Island will be closed beginning at 9 p.m. Thursday night to allow R.R. Dawson Bridge Co. crews to install work zone signs.

The work, centered around the Pinckney Island area, will be finished by 6 a.m. Friday, according to a news release.

The work is associated with the estimated $45 million flyover project linking Bluffton Parkway to U.S. 278. The project, aimed at smoothing daily traffic and hurricane evacuations, is expected to take about 30 months.

Beaufort County Council approved contracts totaling $40.5 million with F&ME Consultants of Columbia in February for the project. The project also has a $4 million contingency budget.

Beaufort County officials urge motorists to exercise caution while workers are present Thursday and Friday.
