The Heritage Library is calling on Hilton Head school students to participate in an essay and art contest celebrating the history and culture of Hilton Head Island. Essays are due Sept. 13; artwork is due June 24. The contests are done in conjunction with the 350/50 celebration recognizing the anniversaries of Capt. ACHIEVEMENTS Zoe Keller was invited by the 2013 Duke TIP Seventh Grade Talent Search to attend the Duke TIP State Recognition Ceremony May 14 at Furman University Timmons Arena in Greenville for students having an exceptional score on the SAT or ACT. Zoe was awarded a medal along with other seventh grade students from the state.

ACHIEVEMENTS For the second consecutive year, the Hilton Head Christian Academy's Upper School Chorus and Eagles Jazz Band both came home with excellent
ratings from the Carowinds Festival of Music. Five players from the Hilton Head Christian Academy soccer team participated in the SCISAA North-South All-Star Game May 18 at Orangeburg Prep, leading the South team -- coached by academy's Ben Gerdts -- to a 2-0 victory. Playing in the win were Lexi Lainhart, Allison Meeder, Andy Anderson, Hannah Reynolds and Alyssa Lane. Lainhart, Meeder and Lane were all-state performers this season, while Anderson was an all-region defender.

ACHIEVEMENTS Junior Julia Nahman was awarded a 4-year, $15,000 per year scholarship to the University of Sciences at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Phoenix. Only five $15,000 scholarships are awarded to students across the country each year. Sports honors: in baseball, Tyler Fox, John Sheehan, Greg Warren and Jake Martin were named All Region, and Jake was also named Player of the Year for Region III; in golf, Mitchell Campbell and Woody Woodward were named All Region; in girls soccer, Halie Parker was named All Region; in boys soccer, Logan Clark and Andrew Spencer were named All Region; in tennis, Andrew Schafer and Jared Woodson were named All Region; Jake Martin, Logan Clark and Andrew Spencer were selected to play in the SCISA All-Star games; in baseball, Lew Kent was named Coach of the Year for Region III.

EVENTS Students have been preparing for the school's annual International Festival by studying various countries and their cultures. The International Festival begins 9:30 a.m. Tuesday with the Parade of Countries. Students will parade around the front parking lot in "national costumes" carrying flags of their chosen country. During this week-long event, students will learn more about their chosen country's geography, history, and culture. In related arts classes they will sing songs native to their country of study, learn art forms, and conduct research. A school musical program has been scheduled for Tuesday.

EVENTS The book fair will run through June 7. Field day is Wednesday. Fifth-graders turn in two pieces of uniform clothing to dress in regular clothes June 4 and 5.
