Local Golf Notebook, May 23: Lucchesi wins Professionals Championship at Moss Creek

Colleton River Plantation's Matt Lucchesi followed his first-round 71 with a second-round 76 to hold off Cherokee Plantation's Mark Tomedolskey to win the Professionals Championship on Tuesday at Moss Creek Golf Club's South Course.

Lucchesi took home the top prize of $880, while Tomedolskey won $700.

In the Assistants Championship, Haig Point's Matt Bova birdied all the par 5s to shoot 73-76--149 to beat Palmetto Dunes Jones Course's Ed Brill by five strokes.

Bova collected $550, while Brill won $400.


Bluffton's Alec Weary shot a two-day score of 2-over 144 to win the Boys 11-14 Division of the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour's Bluffton Junior Open this past weekend at Crescent Point Golf Club.

It was an area sweep in the Girls 15-18 Division. Chile's Isidora Quevedo, a student at Hilton Head Island's Junior Players Golf Academy, finished with a two-day, 7-over-par 149 to claim a four-stroke victory over Hilton Head Island's Nathalie Lezcano, who finished second. In third was Anita Uwadia of Nigeria, a student at the JPGA. She finished at 11-over 153.

In the Boys 15-18 Division, Zach Zediker of Gray, Ga., was the winner.


No. 5 on the South Course at Moss Creek Golf Club saw three holes-in-one over a two-day span last week.

  • Sellers Kite hit a hole-in-one, the fourth of his career, May 17. He used a 5-wood. His playing partner was Tom Ireton.

  • Jane Silcox hit a hole-in-one May 17. She used a 7-iron. Witnesses were Graham Silcox, Gail Bednare and Mike Bednare.

  • Gary Grindrod hit a hole-in-one May 18. He used a 5-iron. Witnesses were Bo Kuehn and Bob Crudden.
