Don't let one party dominate discourse

info@islandpacket.comMay 22, 2013

Now that South Carolina has perfected its practice of gerrymandering all its congressional and state legislative districts, we may as well live in a dictatorship.

One-party rule hurts us all, whether conservative, liberal or independent. With one-party rule, there is no meaningful discussion of differences. We all have to live with the results of whatever law any single-minded person thinks up and have no recourse for achieving a different outcome.

Some want to go back to the gold standard, others want to arm many students and teachers and send them off to be educated, still more would take away any rights women have gained and keep them "barefoot and pregnant."

The common good has disappeared from our vocabulary in this time of constant controversy. Discussion turns into name calling and hatred. What a shame for our state.

But we made it, and we can fix it if we want; 2014 is only a year away. However you vote, let's allow the voices of all to be heard.
