Recreation Briefs, May 22: Beaufort Crossover win AAU district basketball title

The Beaufort Crossover defeated GFOL Capital Heat, 68-41, on Sunday to win the S.C. AAU Basketball Boys Grade 10, 16-under District Championship in Columbia.

The Crossover, which went 4-0 for the weekend and is 8-3 for the year, consists of Otis McLain, Adonis Williams, Jawan Mack, Joshua Polk, Henry Jones, Christian Brown, Devin Steadman, Devontae Wilson, Eric Freeman, Malik Moultrie, Adonis Grant and Nyles Pinckney. The head coach is Kenny Mack, and he is assisted by Al Williams, DeCarla Gray and Anthony Pinckney.

The win qualifies the Crossover for the 10th-grade Boys AAU National Championship held July 22 to 28 in Orlando, Fla. The Crossover's next tournament will be the 10th-grade Super Showcase held July 17 to 23 in Orlando, as well.


The Battery Creek High School Low Country Wrestling Club earned several medals including three state championships, Saturday at Hanahan High School in the various weight classes of the USA Wrestling State Championship.

Battery Creek's Joseph Cuevas won the gold medal at 106-pound freestyle and 106-pound Greco-Roman.

Cuevas' Dolphins teammate DeAndre Johnson won the gold in the 160-pound Greco-Roman event, while taking bronze in the 160-pound freestyle event.

Liam Payne of Robert Smalls Middle School, won the silver in 128-pound freestyle and was fifth at 128-pound Greco-Roman. Tommy Bearden, also from Robert Smalls, won bronze in the 80-pound freestyle.

Battery Creek's Brandon Gray was sixth in 138-pound Greco-Roman and fourth at 138-pound freestyle.


The Ivan Lendl International Junior Tennis Academy on Hilton Head Island will be hosting a free clinic and exhibition matches featuring ATP player Chase Buchanan on Thursday.

Buchanan -- in town to train at the IJTA with his former coach, Todd Tucker -- will play exhibition singles and doubles, starting at 6:30 p.m. The IJTA, located at Port Royal Racquet Club, will host a free clinic for juniors and adults from 5 to 6 p.m. From 6 to 6:30 clinic participants will be able to play interactive games with some of the Ivan Lendl IJTA pros.

Free "Guinea Pig" sessions will be given during TennisUniversity week, which has attracted teaching pros and prospective pros throughout the nation and from a number of foreign countries to Van Der Meer Tennis Academy.

Free lessons will be given by the visiting pros from 5 to 6 p.m. through Thursday, May 20 for all skill levels.

The Hilton Head Plantation Bocce Club spring leagues completed their season recently with cross-divisional playoffs. The playoffs came down to a final match between No. 10 seed Contessas & the Baron (Sue Johnson, Louise & Jack Powers) vs No. 5 seed Cape Coddas (Pam & Bob Bredin). The Cape Coddas prevailed, winning the overall club championship.

The top two teams in each division were:
