Thanks to Kickin' Asphalt Bike Club and Hilton Head Island Biking Ambassador volunteers

letters@islandpacket.comMay 21, 2013

Thanks are in order to the 28 mostly Kickin' Asphalt Bike club members who volunteered their time to assist RBC Heritage ticket-holders and volunteers park more than 2,500 bicycles during the 2013 RBC Heritage.

Hats also are off to the 13 Hilton Head Island Biking Ambassador volunteers who assisted during Heritage week. They provided directional and safety assistance in safety vests donated by Transportation Safety Apparel, ambassador T-shirts provided by the Roadfish Bike Shop, first-aid equipment donated by the Hilton Head Island Fire & Rescue Division. They were trained at the local Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.

The success of this year's program also was due to the efforts of many other people. The Heritage Classic Foundation, which provided operational, publicity and planning support; Sea Pines Community Services Associates, which provided security and other services; On On Tri, which loaned bike parking racks for the week; Hilton Head Island Bicycle Co., which helped organize for the event and assisted with operational matters; and the Sea Pines Racquet Club, which donated the use of a tennis court for the Harbour Town area bike parking.

Lastly, but by no means least, thanks are due to the countless people who rode their bicycles to the RBC Heritage this year and used the organized bike parking facilities. They helped show the world that Hilton Head is a bicycling friendly community and their actions moderated some vehicular parking challenges.
