Deep Well Project grateful for donations from Letter Carriers' 'Stamp Out Hunger' Food Drive

letters@islandpacket.comMay 21, 2013

The Deep Well Project is delightfully overwhelmed with food donations from the Letter Carriers' "Stamp Out Hunger" Food Drive on May 11.

Our Hilton Head community responded in a huge way to the call for groceries that are distributed to those in need on our island. The tons (really) of food collected will keep our pantry shelves full at least until Labor Day.

Despite our slowly improving economy the need for food for the working poor, the sick and the disabled continues to be great. Compare the 33,957 meals provided in 2006 with the 61,047 meals in 2012.

Our great thanks and appreciation go out to the dedicated postal workers who cheerfully picked up hundreds of grocery bags and added hours to their already long work day. Thanks, too, for all the volunteers who unloaded the postal trucks and brought the food to our facility for another set of volunteers to unpack and shelve.

Most of all, thanks to our caring community for participating in the Letter Carriers Food Drive by leaving a generous bag of food by their mailbox. You have ensured that no one on our island will go hungry.
