Plan to raffle assault rifle insensitive, in bad taste

info@islandpacket.comMay 20, 2013

The Greater Bluffton Republican Club had planned "to raise money and attract new members" by raffling a shiny, new AR-15 semi-automatic rifle, the same kind of weapon used to slaughter 20 innocent kids and six brave teachers at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

The weapon was so effective that every single victim was shot multiple times in the space of minutes; one 6-year-old was said to have been shot 11 times. The same kind of military-style weapon was used in the Aurora, Colo., theater massacre.

What a dreadful idea for a raffle, which is illegal in South Carolina. Perhaps the club should have considered asking some of the Sandy Hook families to autograph the certificate to enhance its value. Talk about bad taste.
