Gun raffle, coverage dumb and inappropriate

info@islandpacket.comMay 20, 2013

A few months ago, Secretary of State John Kerry made the statement that we in the United States have the right to be stupid. Although I don't agree with him, this "right" is true in this country and in South Carolina.

This time it was the Greater Bluffton Republican Club raffling an AR-15 rifle to raise cash for itself.

Given the amount of gun violence in the U.S. in recent months and years, this was not an appropriate item with which to raise money. In fact, it was very stupid, selfish and uncaring.

I was outraged, but not surprised, by the newspaper giving the "story" so much space in the paper. This was also stupid and inappropriate.

I do realize that many readers of this paper do not meet the highest expectations of intelligence and education. But why fuel the ignorance of these backward, gun-loving folks by printing a story like this and giving it so much space?
