A 54-year-old woman was struck and killed by a tractor trailer Sunday after she intentionally exited a moving car on Interstate 95 and fell into the truck's path, according to the Jasper County Coroner's Office.

The woman from Laguna Beach, Calif., died at about 6:30 p.m., said Coroner Martin Sauls III. Her death was ruled a suicide.

According to S.C. Highway Patrol, the woman was a passenger in a four-door Buick traveling in the left lane of southbound I-95. Her brother was driving, according to the Coroner's Office.

The woman got out of the car as it was passing a tractor trailer near mile marker 33.

She was struck and killed by the tractor trailer in the right lane, according to the Highway Patrol.

The highway was closed for about three hours, with motorists rerouted off exit 38 until the interstate was reopened at 9:15 p.m.

Both the Highway Patrol and the Jasper County Sheriff's Office are investigating.

No charges have been filed against the woman's brother or the driver of the tractor trailer, Highway Patrol Sgt. Bob Beres said.
