Raffle choice shows bad judgment by board

info@islandpacket.comMay 17, 2013

When I saw the headline about the Greater Bluffton Republican Club's raffle of an AR-15 rifle and two 30- round magazines, my first reaction was, what idiots.

Shortly after reading the rest of the paper, I felt I just had to say something.

How can an organization such as this be so short-sighted? This is definitely a slap in the face of reasonable gun control. First, even if it is the most popular rifle in America, this weapon should only be in the hands of law enforcement officers. Second, what kind of example are they setting for our youth, especially after a Bluffton High School student shows up in class with a loaded gun?

The club's board shows little empathy for the victims of shootings in Newtown, Conn. and Aurora, Colo. I hope the members of the club impeach their new board.
